Sponsored skilled visa holders can work in areas other than their chosen profession to support themselves whilst in Australia looking for a suitable job with the period in between them working in their skilled area also substantially extended.
Migrants on Temporary Work (Skilled) visa (subclass 457), Temporary Skill Shortage visa (subclass 482) and Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (provisional) visa (subclass 494) have up to 180 days at a time, and a maximum of 365 days in total during the visa grant period to assess their visa and migration options if they find themselves not working in the profession they have been sponsored for.
Previously, skilled visa holders were allotted a shorter time to find a new sponsor, apply for a different visa, or arrange their departure from Australia but after changes made to visa conditions 8107, 8607, and 8608, it is easier for them to progress their careers in Australia and support themselves by finding work in between positions.
Once skilled visa holders have found a job, any other job undertaken must be within their nominated occupation whilst they are being sponsored. Holders of any of the visas affected must inform the Department of Home Affairs of any changes in their work circumstances within 28 days of the changes occurring.
Easy Migrate is highly experienced at handling skilled visas and should be the first port of call for skilled visa holders in the case of a resignation or redundancy from a position for which they have been sponsored for. While the changes take the pressure off skilled migrants, allowing them greater flexibility to find temporary work and an extended period in which to reassess their situation, it is best to seek the advice of a registered migration agent.
Not all migration agents have the same level of experience, however, and many are unfamiliar with the ins and outs of the migration system in Australia. Other migration agencies might have paid the registration fee and might be legally able to deem themselves an agency but Easy Migrate, having been a registered agency for over 20 years and counting not just agents in its expert team but several qualified migration lawyers, sets the gold standard for migration and visa advice in Australia.
