Visa Capping Bill Under Scrutiny
Visa Capping Bill Under Scrutiny
Submissions have closed for the Senate inquiry into the Migration Amendment (Visa Capping) Bill 2010.
The passing of this bill would give the Minister extraordinary unfettered powers to cap and cease existing applications by class or subclass of visa, as well as characteristics such as nominated occupation, English level and possibly even nationality.
The MIA has made a public submission to the inquiry urging the Government to rein in "its constant drastic and often retrospective changes". This submission highlights the lack of procedural fairness, the personal and financial cost to individuals, and the potential adverse impact on Australia’s reputation and to the migration advice profession. The Institute urges Members to participate by writing to their Federal Members of Parliament and members of the Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Legislation Committee, which is conducting an inquiry into the proposed amendments.
