As a permanent resident of Australia, you have already enjoyed living in a free and democratic society. When you become an Australian citizen, you will have new responsibilities. (a) If you got your permanent residency before 1 July 2007 and apply before 30 June 2010 -
(i) you must have lived in Australia as a permanent resident for 2 years in last five years AND
(ii) you must have lived in Australia for 12 months in last 24 months.
(These calculations are cumulative, the stay does not need to be "at a stretch").
(b) If you are applying after 1 July 2010 -
(i) you need to have held a substantive visa (temporary or permanent) allowing you to be legally in Australia for at least four years AND
(ii) you have physically lived in Australia for at least three out of last four years (cumulative) AND
(iii) you hold a permanent residency visa for at least last 12 months AND
(iv) you have not been out of Australia for more than 3 months in last 12 months.
